FOCD Volunteer Visitation Program Orientation

Did you know that on any given day there are up to 1,000 immigrants in Orange County detention facilities?

Friends of Orange County Detainees is a community of volunteers that offer regular visits to immigration detainees in Orange County. Since 2013 our volunteers have recorded more than 8,000 visits.

We currently visit immigration detainees at James A. Musick Facility in the City of Irvine and Theo Lacy Facility in the City of Orange.

Our two-hour volunteer orientation covers an introduction to FOCD, a brief explanation of U.S. immigration detention, and step-by-step guidance on how to visit a men and women in immigration detention. Volunteers are able to start visiting upon completion of our orientation.

Topics include:
- History of FOCD
- Overview of our Visitation Program
- Overview of the U.S. immigration system
- The role of a visitor (boundaries / confidentiality)
- Making your first visit
- How to record your visit
